open, organized, and armed resistance to one's government or ruler
this is Tecumseh, the native american
chief who encouraged his people to
fight back against white America. he
relates to rebellion because that is
what he caused. Rebellion.
Luke Skywalker, as you probably know, is a rebel. He
fought against the empire and the dark side. He may
not seem much like Tecumseh to you, but if you look
very closely, you see that they both have the same
sort of feeling behind them.
I chose these pictures, partly because I like Star Wars, but also because they are both important historical figures, and they both relate directly to the concept of rebellion.
the pictures both show great feeling for a cause, albeit in much different ways. Rebellion is the armed resistance of ones ruler. that is why these people are rebels.
speaking of which, who are the first people, when you hear "rebellion" , that you think of? probably those protesters in Libya, who turned into "rebels" as soon as they got guns.
we have been talking in various classes about Libya, and about Qaddafi. as it sounds to me, these people are pretty sure that they don't want him in power any more. they have the same determination as Luke, Tecumseh, and all the rest of those people who said that they didn't like their leader and decided that violence was the answer.
these people relate to Jefferson because Jefferson, in a sense was a rebel. He went a little bit against his own government. he bought the Louisiana territory without asking. he walked to his inauguration, rather than driving. he shook hands with everyone, rather than have them bow. he did not use physical weapons, but he did fight.
